I WILL SING
I will sing in the middle of the night
When the moon won’t rise and the stars won’t shine
O Lord, turn my doubt to faith and put my fear to flight
I will sing in the middle of the night
So many of my friends and loved ones are struggling right now… as am I. We share our personal battles with one another. We read God’s Word, and we encourage each other from it. We pray… and we pray together too.
But as the struggles continue, what else can we do?
2nd Chronicles, chapter 20, comes to mind. Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah and Jerusalem were surrounded by enemies who had come to wage war against them. In great fear, they came together to seek the Lord for help. So Jehoshaphat prayed, and the Lord answered with this beautiful promise, “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s” (vs. 15).
However, they still had to go into the battle!
I absolutely love this part of the story: Jehoshaphat then “appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying: ‘Praise the Lord, For His mercy endures forever’” (vs. 21). Did you catch that? ~ The singers were put ahead of the army as they marched toward the battle!!
Of course the Lord won the victory without any ‘help’ from the people of Judah. But the singers had sung!
“Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
And let us exalt His name together….
The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him,
And delivers them” (Psalm 34: 3 & 7).
So what else can we do in the midst of our battles? We can sing! God is always worthy of our worship, and He is always faithful in keeping every one of His promises. And then,
I will sing when my time on earth is done
When I’ve fought my fight and my race is won
O Lord, You will come for me and bring me safely home
I will sing when my time on earth is done
… and forevermore, amen!!
