GOD OF SPARROWS

As I wake to morning light
Every hope lost in the night
Got no song to sing today
Lonely heart gone charcoal gray

“God of Sparrows” brings to mind a story I would like to share with you about songwriting. I’ll begin with this fun fact: I grew up loving to write poetry… especially when I felt deeply about something. I never wrote a song, or even aspired to. Songwriting never even crossed my mind!

None-the-less, singing songs has always been a part of my life in one way or another. For a long time, lifting up songs of worship to the Lord was how I would begin my day with Him. Then several years ago, I began to feel a sense of discontentment with all the songs that I had been using during my morning worship. Not because there was anything wrong with them! I just felt stale in my worship and longed for fresh songs. So I prayed for the Lord to bring me new songs to sing to Him.

Time passed and I actually forgot about my prayer. Then one day as I sat down to write a poem, a song came out instead! Well, that sitting-down-to-write-a-poem but a-song-came-out-instead thing kept happening… so I thought, “Hmmm, maybe I should go with this.” One thing led to another and I soon found myself connecting with Nashville Christian Songwriters to learn how to properly craft a song.

And that’s when I fell in love with songwriting. Only when I began crafting songs of worship to the Lord did I finally remember my prayer for new songs to sing to Him. Funny how the Lord answered a prayer that I had forgotten that I even prayed…and in a totally unexpected way!

“God of Sparrows” is one of the worship songs that I wrote during my early songwriting days. For this album, MILLION TEARS, it was re-crafted… and my songwriting coach, John Chisum, wrote the beautiful music that goes with these lyrics.

I love the verse, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye” (Psalm 32:8). This little story is about one of those times that God did this for me. Thank You, Lord!

His eye is on the sparrow
He is the God who sees
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me
