WITH ME
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
If I die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take
I am so grateful that my mother taught me this little poetic prayer when I was a small child. The faith expressed is so simple; the trust implied is so absolute. Awake and asleep, in life and in death, may the Lord be with me.
Can you imagine a place or situation that would make you feel completely isolated and alone? For me, that feeling came when I lost both of my parents, one right after the other, only a few years ago. I couldn’t have imagined how completely cut off and alone I would feel! Ever since that time, my heart has continually cried out for the ‘with-ness’ of God.
And God has been ever faithful to assure me by His Word that He is indeed always with me. I think that’s why “With Me” is my favorite song of all from this album. Portions of Psalm 139 inspired me as I wrote this song… and every single time I listen to it, these words minister to my heart.
If I follow the sun across the sky
Even then will Your hand still hold me tight
If I’m found in a moonless starless night
Lord, to You darkness shines like the light
If I soar to another galaxy
Even there You will always be with me
If I dig down into hell underneath
Your right hand will still hold on to me
Where can I go? Where can I flee?
Lord, You are there for my soul You will keep
And when I lay me down to sleep
Lord, when I wake You will still be with me
O Lord, when I wake You will still be with me
“‘and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age’” ~ Jesus, in Matthew 28:20. Thank You, Lord!!!
